EDAIC – European Diploma for Anaesthesiologists & Intensive Care

What is EDAIC?

The board of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) has developed a diploma for anaesthesiologists, intensivists, and related healthcare professionals (nurses, perfusionists, technicians). Graduates of EDAIC will be awarded the European Diploma in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (EDAIC) which is a complementary qualification to nationally/internationally recognised degree(s) for medical and paramedical professionals.

This diploma aims to provide European anaesthesiologists and intensivists with a common structured knowledge base, an update of their skills and expertise on current practice/procedures (basic life support) that will allow them to work confidently in different practise settings across Europe. The EDAIC program is planned for 3 days but the curriculum will be flexible to allow delivery of an appropriate program for each participant.

Content & Structure of EDAIC Exam

The EDAIC examination will be held jointly by ESAIC and ECS (European Council of Specialists in Anaesthesia and intensive care), an independent non-profit organization that has been established to maintain and improve the education and training of anaesthesiologists across Europe. This autonomous body is a non-profit organization with charitable status and has representatives from all ESAIC national member societies.

This exam will be composed of a written part (30% of the final grade) and a practical skills test (70%). The examination will be underwritten by ECS, a professional development body for Anaesthesiologists. It is intended to be delivered jointly by ESAIC and ECS, according to an agreed-upon curriculum.

Practical Exam:

The practical exam will be held under the supervision of a faculty member who is experienced in anaesthesia or intensive care (at least 5 years). The practical exam will run for 15 minutes maximum per candidate. A candidate may do 3 different exercises: intubation, airway difficulties (difficult mask ventilation), chest drain insertion.

All skills must be assessed by the faculty in charge and by an ESAIC examiner (neither of these persons may be related to each other). There is no option for retakes if the candidate fails any of the practical skills. Each skill must receive a passing grade (>60%) to be eligible for the written test.

According to the scoring system, if a pass is not achieved in one skill area (e.g. airway difficulty), the candidate will receive 20% of full points for that section and those points will be added on top of his/her written score before arriving at the final grade.
